Why did Michael write this book?

Michael had blogged for his company’s website for several years and after a while, he began to notice a common theme to his blogging. He noticed that the clients that he worked with usually needed more help in certain areas of their lives before they could improve their leadership skills. Most busy professionals that he works with are looking for clear direction translating insight into their behavior. Unfortunately, insight alone doesn’t create sustainable change. To improve your leadership skills, you must take action for lasting change to come about. He knew that he wanted to help more people create change in their lives and so began the lengthy process of writing this book.

What is the book, Changes, about?

There are 2 parts to the book. Part one focuses on 7 life domains that are important to improving your leadership skills and yourself. These habits are good predictors of success and failure. They make up the acronym Changes.

  • Cognition - how people think

  • Heart - how people feel

  • Action - what people do

  • Nourishment - the physical component of how people sleep, move, and eat

  • Guts - the courage people have to act

  • Environment- people places and things people surround themselves with

  • Spirit - belief systems which include spiritual and nonspiritual

The second part of the book helps the reader understand who to ask for help if they struggle to do the work on their own. It focuses on helping people find the right kind of professional to help them. Michael used his experience with clients as well as plenty of research to write the book.

How can you use the book to improve your leadership skills?

Michael recommends that you choose a few areas from the book to evaluate in your own life and move forward from there. Each section has work that you can do on your own. For instance, consider the stories that you tell yourself. Write out 3 negative stories that you tell yourself and think of ways that you can reframe those stories. What you tell yourself stays with you. What you may consider failures can be reframed into a different narrative. What should people do when they recognize that they need some support?

As people dive into the book they may recognize that there is a theme with the work that they are doing to improve themselves. They may find that they need a bit more help than the exercises in the book can offer. Think about your communication style and personality then think about the problem you are having. Is the problem stemming from a trauma or is it a lack of skill set or lack of motivation? There is a big difference between having a mentor, a coach, and a therapist. The book outlines the different disciplines so that people understand what they’re getting into. It also recommends ways to choose the right kind of professional to help you improve your leadership skills and your life.

How to Tell if That Business Coaching Course is Worth It #58

Before you invest in another business coaching course stop and listen to this episode of My Biz Bestie. If you are anything like Maelisa and Amber you have invested a ton of money in masterminds, courses, programs, and anything else you can think of to help your business grow. But how can you tell if you’re getting a good ROI? On this episode the biz besties help you analyze whether or not you should buy that next business course (or join that mastermind, etc) or whether the one you are currently in is actually doing you any good.

Do you have space in your life to dedicate to this investment?

Before you invest any money in a business coaching course or a program you need to analyze your life. Do you have time for it and do you need it? Oftentimes there is value in what you are looking to purchase but if you don’t have the free time or free mind space to invest in it then it won’t be of any value to you. So, do you have space in your life to dedicate to this thing? If you don’t try looking for a middle ground. If you know that you aren’t ready to put yourself all in then there might be a shorter program that you can handle right now. Get clear with yourself on what you can handle. If it's not a hell yes then its a no.

What is the need you are trying to fill?

When you are considering signing up for a business coaching course or a program then think about your needs. How will this investment help you learn what you need right now? If the thing you are looking at fills a need then go for it. Something you may not have considered is whether you really need to learn the new thing or if you should just hire it out instead. Sometimes you don’t need to learn the skill you just need to hire it out. Check in with yourself. Do a time study and identify what you are actually spending your time on. Everyone has time blindness and grossly overestimates or underestimates what they spend time on. Once you look at the data then you are in a better place to make decisions.

What is the ROI that you are looking for?

Before you invest in another business coaching course think about the outcome. How should things look different for you after you complete the course? Don’t be afraid to contact the seller. Ask them specific questions about how you will achieve your goals. Don’t be shy! They are trying to sell you something so they should be happy to answer the questions. This also helps manage your expectations. Understand how to measure your ROI if you are doing your work and the coach is doing their work. Ask the coach what their expectation is, can you complete it?

How do you know if the business coaching course is worth it?

You should already have an idea of the results that you want to see. Make sure to have a way of tracking those results whether it’s weekly, monthly or whatever. Have a specific way to look for your progress. When a goal is ambiguous it can be hard to see the progress even if you aren’t feeling it at the moment. You take a program, not because you are unable to learn without it, but because something is holding you back from doing it on your own. So give credit where credit is due when you do achieve your goals. So, are you achieving the goals you set out to achieve?

The whole idea behind the Strive 5 is to dream big, In your wildest dreams who would you like to meet? Even the smallest interaction can lead to something bigger down the road. Nikki’s Strive 5 doesn’t always include people she wants to sell to. Often it includes people she simply wants to be around and learn from.

How to use the Stride 5 list to set networking goals

Networking at live events can be tricky. You only have so much time at a conference so creating a Stride 5 list and setting networking goals can help you from feeling overwhelmed. There are a million ways to get sidetracked from your true intentions if you don’t have concrete networking goals. The Stride 5 list is a way to focus your intentions on those you really want to meet. You’ll meet plenty of other people as well. But you can put yourself in situations or take opportunities to connect with the people on your Stride 5 list. What should people who are just starting out focus on?

Don't be annoying on social media


There are many faux pas that you can make on social media. One of the most irritating ones is to friend someone solely to get them to like your business page. Not only does this not help your business page, but it is also annoying as well! Another huge turnoff that some people do is to direct message someone with the sole intention to sell them something. Have you ever had someone add you to their email list without asking you? Not only is this super spammy, but it's also illegal! Share but don’t solicit


There is a fine line between sharing information and trying to solicit a sale. Sharing is caring, but soliciting without a relationship is just plain yucky. Before you begin soliciting clients you must first build a relationship. People don’t want to be hit up for a direct sale from everyone they meet. If you are trying to hook someone into buying something the relationship feels inauthentic. Connect with people from a place of interest in them, not solely to get people to jump into your funnel. Making connections and building relationships are what networking is all about.


Give when you are reaching out


When you reach out to someone don’t just ask what they can do for you. Build the relationship first. You have to give something before you can ask for something in return. Love him or hate him, Gary V has a great rule of thumb about asking --- give, give, give, then ask. A great way to reach out to a new contact is to highlight how you can share value. No one wants to connect with you just to talk about you, so offer up a value bomb first. If you do have a need, ask the people you already have a relationship with rather than someone you don't know. Creative networking ideas


Reaching out doesn’t have to be so serious. You can actually have fun in the way that you connect with a new contact. If you connect with someone in a Facebook group thread and you feel that you have made a connection you can always ask if you can DM them. A virtual coffee date is a fun way to connect personally with someone online. Online networking is one thing, but how do you reach out to someone that you have met at a live event? One fun way to make an impression is to send them a short video message. This is a creative way to make a connection and really stand out from the crowd.
